Emmy Award-winning actor and playwright Ron Jones portrays the African-American experience from the 1965 Voting Rights Act to present day.

Emmy Award-winning actor and writer Ron Jones will present his play, “The Movement: 50 Years of Love and Struggle,”  Nov. 17 at the University of Redlands.

The free, public performance offers a personal glimpse of 50 years of African-American experience, from the 1965 Voting Rights Act to present day. Set against key moments in history, the one-man, multimedia production features historical footage, interactive video, quotes and music from the last two generations.

Jones portrays 10 characters, dramatizing each one’s reaction to political, social and cultural events from the last half century—including a preacher’s reaction to the death of Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement.

A veteran actor, writer, director and drama instructor for more than 25 years, Jones was a founding member of Urban Improv, a Boston-based theatre arts program for at-risk youth. The group won the 2002 New England Emmy Award for Best Children’s Program for its television special “Re:Action.” He is also the former artistic director for ImprovBoston.
