Below are some questions we are frequently asked.  

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a 30-45 day online fundraising campaign in which a passionate group of project advocates, with assistance from the Office of Annual Giving, tell their story through word and video and then solicit online donations from a large group of University of Redlands donors and their own personal contacts via e-mail and social media.

Does crowdfunding require much effort?

Crowdfunding may seem like a quick and easy way to raise large sums of money, but successful projects require significant time (10-12 weeks) and dedicated work (planning, soliciting donations from family/friends, writing copy, producing videos, creating social media content, thanking donors) from a core team of 5-10 individuals who are passionate about the project, are willing to take ownership of the project, and have a large network of potential supporters to engage.

What are the requirements for a successful campaign?

A passionate team: A passionate team of 5-10 project advocates is needed to run the many aspects of the campaign. Daily work is required over this 10-12 week period.

A large crowd of supporters: The project team must be willing to personally reach out to family, friends, and colleagues for support. It is recommended that each project advocate have at least 100 relevant personal e-mail solicitation targets. Generally, a group can expect to raise about $4 per e-mail address that is solicited.

A project that is inspired by the University's mission: A project that connects with the University and is supported by project advocates who are 100 percent invested in the cause are essential for a successful campaign.

Who can apply?

Applying to have a project featured on Rfund is open to recognized student groups, faculty and staff. Projects are evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Rfund committee, which is comprised of individuals from various departments across the University. Our committee is here to make sure your project supports the University of Redlands mission and that crowdfunding is the best platform to raise funds for your project.

What are the charges and fees?

Fundraising through Rfund is free! All the money raised goes directly to the project All funds are deposited directly into the gift account of the group/department.

What is an Ambassador?

An Ambassador is a volunteer who has a connection to the organization/department running a crowdfunding campaign. An Ambassador is committed to helping the project succeed, and is willing to dedicate 1 hour of time weekly during the project's active phase to share the project with their own contacts through email and social media.

Why are Ambassadors Important?

Ambassadors are a crucial way for Rfund crowdfunding projects to reach a wider audience. Without ambassadors, it is much more difficult for projects to reach their fundraising goals. Ambassadors serve as a connection to would-be supporters who might not otherwise learn about a project.

How do I become an Ambassador?

When you are selected to be a project ambassador you will receive an email from the Rfund team on behalf of the crowdfunding project creator. The email will direct you to a website where you can create a personal ambassador profile. Once you have created a profile, you will be given a unique web-link that you will use to share the project through your personal email, as well as through social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
