RAÚL ACERO

November 16 - December 12, 2021
University Art Gallery

Opening Reception
Wednesday, November 17
4:30–6:30 p.m.

The Art Department of the University of Redlands is pleased to present Colecciones, an exhibition of recent artwork by Professor Emeritus Raúl Acero. The show opens to the public on Tuesday, November 16 and runs through Sunday, December 12, 2021 at the University Art Gallery. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening reception on Wednesday, November 16 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. (Face coverings required.)

Colecciones will feature sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media paintings that connect to Acero’s roots in his native Colombia and are expressions of his identity as an immigrant and person of color. Though not usually politically motivated, Acero’s choices of materials and subject matter, particularly racial and ethnic content, place the work in that realm. Within the hierarchy of the contemporary art world there has been little room for the voices of artists of color or those working with non-precious materials. Acero’s work occupies this neglected space – with the perspective of an immigrant and the use of humble materials, his work champions non-dominant voices in spite of the biases that exist.
