The Valentine Foundation Scholarship was established in 2010 by Mrs. Becky Valentine to honor her late husband Bruce, a University of Redlands alumnus from the Class of 1941.
Mrs. Valentine established herself as a highly successful businesswoman, but she was unable to complete her own college degree. With the understanding that an advanced degree was becoming more and more important in a global world, Mrs. Valentine responded by creating a scholarship to advance solid American values of ingenuity and excellence.
Mrs. Valentine wants to provide the personalized college experience found at the University of Redlands to a qualified student with financial need. The scholarship should be awarded to a student with a strong academic record who is majoring in the sciences. The Valentine Foundation Scholar should use their Redlands education for maximum good and focus their lives on becoming a productive member of society.
Mr. and Mrs. Valentine left Redlands in 1941 and spent several years in Washington DC during WWII. When Mr. Valentine was sent to the European theater for several years on the front lines, Mrs. Valentine returned home to Redlands to await the end of the war. After the war was over, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine spend ten years in Rochester, New York where he worked for Investographs. They then moved to Long Island, New York, where Mr. Valentine worked for Merrill Lynch, Inc. During their time in New York, the Valentines enjoyed travelling through Europe. Avid golfers, they played courses up and down the eastern seaboard and in Europe, including Scotland’s famed course, St. Andrews.
After Mr. Valentine’s passing in 1986, Mrs. Valentine moved back to California where she actively invested and managed the family portfolio for the good of the University of Redlands and several other worthy charities. Her focus during her time in California was on growing her estate for the benefit of others. Mrs. Valentine continued to play golf and travel well into her nineties, traveling across the continental US, Hawaii, Mexico and Canada.
Through the Valentine Foundation Scholarship, Mrs. Valentine is making an impact that will benefit students and our society for generations to come.
