| The women’s volleyball team competed this season with the enthusiasm and passion that has come to be expected from their vastly improved program. Home crowds that averaged well over 100 fans a night were treated to the Bulldogs’ exciting style of play that translated to a few heart-stopping five-game matches. The team started off home competition this season with one of those incredible five-set matches, beating Southern California rival Chapman University to kick off a great season. The team boasted a 10-14 overall record by consistently putting up tough defensive numbers and offering an exciting and well-balanced offense. Junior Lauren Reid (Villa Park, CA), a First Team All-Conference selection, led the team most of the season in kills and hitting percentage and was a constant presence from the left-side. Reid’s 307 kills on the season set a new Redlands record, beating out the former number one spot by 24 kills. The heart of the team, though, was sophomore Courtney Cho (Aiea, HI), who was an invaluable contributor at both the libero and setter positions. In the games she started as setter, she averaged 11.39 assists per game. The team will certainly feel the loss of lone senior Shannon Mortensen (La Mirada, CA) but the return of Reid, Cho, Second Team All-SCIAC junior Valerie Detwiler (Hemet, CA), Verizon Academic All-District sophomore Bethany DeGuzman (Hilo, HI), and freshman Marla Smith (Orange, CA) will provide all the depth the Bulldogs need to propel them to the top of the conference next season.
