The University of Redlands is again among the top 10 master's universities in the West and one of the great schools at a great price, according to the U.S. News & World Report's 2009 Best Colleges Rankings.

In the U.S. News and World Report's annual college guide, Redlands is listed eighth in the category of Western universities that offer undergraduate and master's programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. The university was sixth last year. Redlands has repeatedly been ranked in the top 10 list in that category since 1995.

Among the top 10 schools in the category this year, Redland tied with first-place Trinity University for the lowest student/ faculty ratio (10/1).

"We are pleased to again be recognized by the U.S. News and World Report as among the 10 best Western master's universities," said Neil Macready, the university's Vice President for University Relations. "Our commitment to student achievement and personalized education is seen in our low student to faculty ratio."

The University of Redlands is also ranked second among Western master's universities that offer a great value-a category that considers the higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal.

Redlands had 67 percent of its students receiving need-based grants in 2007, which reduced the average cost of attending by 50 percent.

The university was also selected as an "A+ School for B Students," cited in the publication as one of 311 schools that "accept students with a desire to achieve but less than stellar grades."

"We are proud of the transformative experience we provide our students; the opportunity we offer them to explore and reach their potential," said Macready. "As our president Stuart Dorsey has noted, we measure ourselves by what our students take with them when they graduate, not what they bring when they enroll as freshman."

The university has also been listed among one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduate education in The Princeton Review, which features the college in the newly published 2009 edition of its annual book, "The Best 368 Colleges."

Only about 15 percent of America's 2,500 four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges are in the book.

In its profile on the University of Redlands, The Princeton Review quotes extensively from Redlands students the publication surveyed for the book.  Among their candid comments on the college, undergraduates said they enjoyed a "personable, student-oriented" school.

Students praised a study abroad program that "is strongly emphasized and encouraged. If there's anywhere in the world that you've had an interest in going-for a month, or semester to a year-the University of Redlands is the perfect place to do it."

They also called the campus "beautiful for its Roman-style buildings and pillars, especially in the winter with the snow-capped mountains in the background."

The ranking lists in "The Best 368 Colleges" are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 120,000 students (about 325 per campus on average) attending the 368 colleges in the book.
