August 14, 2008 -

The University of Redlands will welcome more than 40 new faculty members, including a Fulbright Scholar in Residence, for the 2008-09 school year.

Most of the new members are in the College of Arts and Sciences, where professors were hired in areas including science, government, English and history.  The School of Business also hired three full-time faculty, while the School of Education hired six.

One of the faculty members, Nina Nurmila, is the university's first-ever Fulbright Scholar in Residence. Nurmila, who is from Indonesia, holds a PhD in Islamic Studies and describes herself as an Islamic feminist. She has worked as a faculty member or lecturer since 1993.

In addition to her work as a professor, Nurmila is expected to lead community education as part of an effort to deepen understandings of the Muslim world. She is expected to explore ideas about what it is like to be a Muslim in different parts of the world, and to deconstruct stereotypes that Americans might hold about Muslims.
