The School of Education is helping to get the school year off to a good start for local elementary students.

Faculty, staff and students from the University of Redlands School of Education are working to provide low-income students at two Redlands elementary schools with the supplies they need to start the academic year.

A variety of school supplies are being collected from across the campus and community as part of the annual What a Difference $1 Makes campaign.

Items will be donated to Lugonia and Franklin elementary schools in Redlands and will be distributed by school officials.

Items being collected include notebook paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, scissors, Crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, markers and index cards. Cash donations also are being accepted.
Some of the cash donations will be used to purchase school supplies, while some money also will be used to purchase gift certificates from Payless ShoeSource.

Supplies will be collected through the second week of August in the School of Education.
This year’s school supply campaign is particularly important, according to Martin Bright, executive secretary to the dean in the School of Education.

â€œWith prices rising for such necessities as food and gasoline, we know that many of our local families are in need of assistance,” said Bright, who is coordinating the effort. “We believe it’s worthwhile to give all students an equal opportunity to have the school supplies they need to start the school year. It’s an important part of helping all children to succeed.”

Last year, about 20 boxes of school supplies were donated to the two schools.
