The University is Rickard’s musical and academic home. Rickard received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Redlands, before becoming an associate professor of music at the University in 1970.
Since 1971, Rickard has been the driving force behind the Feast of Lights, an internationally recognized Christmas pageant, which marked its 60th year in 2007. He also has been director of choral activities since 1980.
Rickard has been an integral part of University life for more than three decades, serving as either a conductor or organist at convocation, baccalaureate and many other widely attended University events. He is particularly known for his long-time dedication to the Compline service.
Rickard also is widely recognized for his efforts to enrich the cultural life of the Redlands community. He is the founder and director of the Community Chorus of Redlands, a group that performs throughout the year. He serves as minister of music at Trinity Episcopal Church and as musical director for a number of summer musical theater presentations. He also is an accompanist and arranger for the Kevin Blandford Memorial Bagpipe Band, a group of pipers and drummers that have nabbed both national and international honors.
Rickard’s teaching career has gained him accolades from students, faculty and the community. He has taught a variety of music classes, including choir, composition, conducting and church music courses. He also has made valuable contributions to the canon of sacred choral music, publishing more than 50 compositions and arrangements. Several of his works are in the catalogue of Sacred Music Press.
