On March 20, University of Redlands students hosted a wine and cheese reception and silent auction to raise money for Quarters for Kenya.
Featured speakers were the Rev. Macmillan Kiiru and his wife, Nellie, co-directors of the Shepherd's Homes located in the Nairobi area of Kenya. Their facility provides a refuge for approximately 50 children who have lost their parents to AIDS.
Local Rotary Clubs led by Redlands resident David Maupin began Quarters for Kenya as a tribute to Charles Kean, a native of Kenya and an active Rotarian in Redlands until his death in 2004, and sought to raise 1 million quarters for Shepherd's Homes--a goal that has been surpassed.
The University of Redlands Quarters for Kenya effort, led by students David Armstrong and Kaitlin Moore and 13 others, has raised more than $43,000 in the past four and a half years.
Redlands students wanted to raise an additional $20,000 to the cause. Through the wine and cheese reception and other campus events, the students have raised $16,000 toward their goal--more than $8,000 was raised at the reception.
