March 14, 2008 - Redlands, CA - In a duel against closely-ranked opponents, the #15 Redlands men’s tennis team earned a solid 7-2 win over the #16 Missionaries of Whitman College (WA) in a non-conference match on Thursday. After taking two of the three doubles points, the Bulldogs captured all but one of the singles matches for the important victory, improving to 11-1 overall.
In doubles, Redlands looked to the #2 team of sophomore Mike Reading (Mill Cree, WA) and senior Zack Hasenyager (Santa Barbara, CA) to capture an 8-4 victory. The #3 duo of sophomore Jeff Hammond (Mercer Island, WA) and freshman Keven Wong (Kaneohe, HI) offered an 8-6 win to put the Bulldogs ahead after the doubles competition. Redlands remained in control during the singles matches as freshman David McCall (shown in photo; Woodside, CA) took down his opponent at #6, 6-1, 6-3, while senior Eric Wagar (Yakima, WA) made quick work of his opponent at #2, 6-3, 6-2. In addition, junior Aron Ouye (San Diego, CA) gained a solid 6-4, 6-3 victory at the #3 spot as senior Ransom Cook (Brookline, MA) came out on top at #5 by scores of 7-5, 7-5. Reading provided the final point with his two-set victory at #4, 7-6(8), 7-5.
The Bulldogs (11-1 overall) play their third and fourth matches of the week on Saturday as they host #17 Carnegie Mellon University (PA) and Skidmore College at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. |
