| March 3, 2008 - University of Redlands physics professor Eric Hill, the 2007-08 College of Arts and Sciences Professor of the Year, will deliver the professor of the year President’s High Table speech on Tuesday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Casa Loma Room.
Hill was named professor of the year by students of the university’s Mortar Board organization at a reception earlier this month. Hill was recognized for “his passion, his determination, and his consideration,” according to a student nomination speech given during the reception. “Known for his consideration of others and availability to students both in and out of the class, he is a professor that teaches with great passion.”
Outside of the classroom, Hill has a background in the arts. He has contributed both on stage and behind the scenes, discovering a love of Shakespearean works in college, according to the students’ speech.
Hill received his Bachelor of Arts in Physics and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Carleton College where he was an independent researcher and a technical assistant. He earned his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Minnesota where he was an undergraduate research mentor, a graduate research assistant and a teaching assistant. In 2001 Hill began his career at the University of Redlands.
Hill has taught a range of courses in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, including fundamentals of physics, musical acoustics, a Johnston First Year Seminar and a Proudian Honors program science seminar on power and society.
In the past seven years, Hill has published nine journal articles in his field. He has served the university in a variety of ways, from the dean search advisory committee to acting department chair. He is affiliated with the American Physical Society and the American Vacuum Society.
Hill will deliver a speech entitled “Beautiful Data” at the March 11 high table. Reservations are required and are $12.50 for university employees and $17.50 for guests, which includes dinner. They can be made by calling Chris Deyo at (909) 748-8308 or by e-mail at Chris_Deyo@redlands.edu.
