Young & Sharp: Take time to talk
The main cause for the coarsening of public discourse is our preoccupation with the speed of service. With an increased focus on getting everything done within a minimal amount of time, people spend less time making the little interactions that matter, such as asking how one's day is going or actively engaging a customer.
While a few companies still emphasize the power of a smile, more businesses could benefit from the good feelings associated with smiling. Surely making someone's day is worth the 20 extra seconds he or she spends in line.
