Transcript of the video interview:
"I came out to visit and I saw the Johnston Center, and I completely fell in love with it--in the sense that it offered me the opportunities to follow precisely what I wanted to follow, and look exactly at the topics of interest that I had, rather than having to sort-of experiment with everything, and pretend I didn't know what I wanted. I could come in with that focus, and just drive toward it.
"I'm looking at international relations in a different way, focusing on development, particularly political and economic development in Latin America. So, I'm looking at that in the sense that I really want to see new ideas on how developing countries can be supported in this world, and how they can be integrated, particularly Latin America, because I have my roots in it.
"Next spring I will be going to Mexico, to the second-most southern state of Mexico, Oaxaca, through a Johnston integrated semester, where I'll be able to mold my own study-abroad experience.
"I'll be learning Zapotec, the indigenous language of Southern Mexico, and really getting involved with the indigenous issues of that area, and really creating my own education. But, instead of on-campus, in another country, so that should be very exciting." |
