Literature
Curriculum for the bachelor's degree in English literature combines the careful reading of texts with the exciting new discoveries of modern literary theory.
The program focuses on mastering the variety of ways of reading prose and poetry, drama and fiction. Students study theories of language and literature that they use to interpret individual texts; they study literature within historical and cross-cultural contexts; they forge connections between literary studies and neighboring disciplines in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
The canon used by the department increasingly seeks to situate Anglo-American writing in a worldwide context.
Creative Writing
The Creative Writing Program at the University of Redlands offers one of the most intensive creative writing majors available to undergraduates in the United States. Students in the program have the opportunity to explore poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in focused workshops led by a faculty of committed and accomplished poets; novel and short story writers; and nonfiction writers experienced in memoirs, personal essays, travel writing, cultural criticism, and more. The small class size of the program's workshops and seminars and the close interaction with faculty offer students a unique and enriching setting for an in-depth study of literature from a writer's perspective and a vigorous pursuit of creative expression and professional craft.
