"My name is Kate Smalkin, and I went to the McDonough School, in Owings Mills Maryland, which is a boarding school.
"I grew up in the outskirts of Baltimore, not in the city, but my dad, being a judge, kind of saw all of the political and social problems in the city. There were drug problems and there was social injustice, and things like that, and so, you know, growing up having a first hand experience with all of that, was very enlightening, and it kind of motivates you, when politics are dinner-table conversation, that's kind of what you want to follow and study when you go on to college.
"So far I am working toward a bachelor of science in global business, and also a bachelor of arts in French.
"Coming from the East Coast, many people are set on the Ivy Leagues, and they're set on the big name schools, but I came to visit the campus and I absolutely just fell in love with it and I knew it was the place for me, so I made the journey, 3000 miles out here, to California. I am very happy now.
"After I'd been here for a couple weeks, and gotten settled into my courses my Freshman year, the school just shocked me. It had completely exceeded my expectations. I didn't know what to expect, really, and I just found a place that was warm and wonderful." |
