Open Goal
Sam Mirkovich , Class of 2005
From the playing field to the classroom, Sam Mirkovich's options are open.

Transcript of the video interview:

"Sam Mirkovich, I'm from Las Vegas, Nevada, and I'm currently finishing my senior year.  I'm double majoring in history and French.

"I started playing soccer when I was four years old, I played it throughout middle school and high school, and basically I wanted to be professional soccer player.

"I was talking about this with one of my friends the other day, we've been to Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Northern California, and we've played teams from all over the country as well. It's cool when the university looks to you and your team as ambassadors for the school when they send us across the country. And there's other people that, of course, haven't heard of Redlands either, and we get to show them, what Redlands is, and that's kind of an honor, I guess.

"We've won our conference, the last four years, which is Division III schools in Southern California, and then my Freshman year, 2001, we had our run all the way to the National Championship game. That was a really great experience and it really just got me excited about being in college and the whole deal. That's why soccer was really good for me, because it brought me here, and it got me here, and then that kind of led me another way.

"Once I was here I think, I was really inspired by a lot of the faculty, and it really got my brain moving, and I started thinking more and more about what I could do, and just kind of changed my plan a little bit.

"I think my first class that got me going was my European Civilization class, with Dr. Tharp, it's a great course, it's really pretty general, overlook at European Civilization, and it just, I really liked what I was studying, and that's really pretty much the first time I could say that.

"Right now I'm trying to keep as many options as possible open, and it's kind of why Law School, I'm kind of leaning toward that's route, because there's so much you can do with that degree, but I basically, I'd love to work in the government. I think that's where I can make the best contribution.

"I think I'm probably going to go over to France now for a couple years, just work as like a teacher, and maybe try to get a couple of government internships, and then go back to law school."
