Transcript of the video interview:
"I came into Redlands thinking that I wanted to be a high school history teacher, and then I kind of changed my ideas around and molded what I wanted to do because of some of the clubs that I’m involved with on campus.
"The big influence was Big Buddies. Big Buddies has been around since 1989. We bring a group of kids in from Redlands every Tuesday night for two hours and we do homework with them and play games with them--we just give them a really positive influence--but I started working with the middle school age kids and started working with them on a one-on-one level and got to know them and their families, and realized that they’re the ones who need a lot of help now. They’re middle school age, but they’re having trouble with math and reading and that’s where I feel like I could really make a difference with them.
"I figured out that’s what I would like to do, but I don’t want to do it in a public school setting or a private school setting, I’d like to do it once they’ve already hindered their lives a little bit. I’d like to bring them back onto the the path that they can take to go to college or at least graduate high school, and get a good paying job." |
