"Salzburg happened for me in the fall of 1998, and it was the best thing I did. Now when I talk to students about planning their four years at the University of Redlands, I always include some discussion of how important it is to leave this place for a semester and live and breathe the air of some other culture. I just happened to end up in Salzburg, not only because the University has a beautiful castle there in which we can live and study, but it’s one of the music capitals of the world, and so every single night--okay, I take that back: every other night--in Salzburg I would walk down from the hill and find some concert that was going to be performed that night, get a ticket and spend two hours, that’s what I did. And then I stood by the door at the concert hall and watched these musicians leave. I was a groupie for four months!" |
