Anthony Suter’s music has been heard in nearly every major U.S. city, as well as a growing list of international venues. His works include three chamber operas, chamber and orchestral music, and several works for wind ensemble. He studied at the University of Southern California (B.M., 2002), the University of Michigan (M.M., 2004), and the University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A., 2008). His teachers have included Donald Crockett, Stephen Hartke, Frank Ticheli, William Bolcom, Susan Botti, Bright Sheng, and Dan Welcher.
He has received awards from the National Opera Association, the College Band Director’s National Association, ASCAP, Associazione Culturale Musicale “Euritmia”, the British and International Bass Forum, Concorso 2 Agosto, and the Texas String Project. In 2010, he was honored with a University-wide award for Innovative Teaching from the University of Redlands.
Centaur Records has released a recording entitled Hymns to Forgotten Moons: the music of Arnold Schoenberg and Anthony Suter [CRC 3019], which features recordings of two of Professor Suter’s works performed by University of Redlands faculty.
Professor Suter’s work, Electric Breakdown (a short chamber concertino for electric guitar and chamber ensemble), was performed on a four city tour by the NYC-based NOW Ensemble in the Fall of 2009. The work was performed in New York City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Sarasota. Recent performances have included the University of Redlands Wind Ensemble at the 2010 CBDNA convention in Reno, and a number of college wind ensemble performances. His quartet, chants and hymns of voices ephemeral, was performed by ensemble green in Los Angeles this past Spring. The Redlands Symphony also gave the world premiere of his orchestral work grafted hymnologies in April 2011, conducted by University of Redlands Professor of Conducting and Redlands Symphony Assistant Conductor Co Nguyen.
Current projects include a work for the University of Redlands Madrigals choral group, and a multi-media opera collaboration with sound art group MLuM (Micheal Raco-Rands and Marco Schindelmann) and playwright Doris Baizley.
Professor Suter has a deep interest in music for younger musicians, and is a vocal advocate for public school music programs, often serving as a guest conductor and clinician for K-12 music programs. His thoughts on teaching composition, writing for bands, and music education are published in a collection of composer essays entitled Composers on Composing for Band (edited By Mark Camphouse, published by GIA publications).
