The University of Redlands Art Gallery is pleased to present The Grace of Being, an exhibition of handcrafted furniture by artist and University of Redlands alumni John Spivey, ‘68.
Santa Barbara based John Spivey has been working with wood for over 40 years. His work is inspired by the flow of lines, whether that of a mountain range, a tree branch, wood grain, or Japanese calligraphy. Spivey’s aim is to create a sensuous minimalism that remains vibrant and alive over the years in a timeless fashion. His work is primarily executed in sustainable North American walnut, cherry, and maple.
For his exhibition at the University of Redlands, Spivey will show several examples of the chairs, tables and other furniture he has designed and built. His work has appeared twice recently with the Smithsonian Craft Show and three times with the Philadelphia Museum of Art craft show. His work can be viewed at johnspiveyfurniture.com. His studio is located in Santa Barbara, CA.
