Housing Selection and Placement Process (returning students)

Res Life picture

This process takes place each Spring to secure your housing for the following Fall. Please visit myRedlands to participate in the process.

Timeline & Important Dates for 2016-2017 Housing

January 27-February 6:
Residence Life and Housing staff will discuss this Housing Selection and Placement Process at floor/hall meetings to answer questions and help you through the process. (See your staff for the date and time of the meeting nearest you.)

Monday, February 15 - Thursday, February 18:
Off Campus Interest Workshops
All students interested in petitioning to live off campus (except for those meeting the automatic approval criteria listed below) MUST attend one Off Campus Interest Workshop AND receive an 80% or higher on the quiz administered at the end. If a student does not attend the Workshop or fails to achieve an 80%, that student's petition for off campus will not be considered. There will be no exceptions.

Thursday, February 18:
Accommodation Requests due in hard copy to Academic Success and Disability Services by 5 p.m.

Off Campus Petition Request due by 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted via the Student Life portal in myRedlands and should only be submitted by students who attended one of the above Off Campus Interest Workshops.

Students who are over 23 years of age, live at home with immediate relatives within 30 miles of campus, or are married or in registered domestic partnerships may be approved off campus, but MUST still submit petitions based on this timeline. (In order to petition for off campus outside of the Housing Selection and Placement Process timeline, students meeting these criteria must submit their petitions at least 45 days prior to their intended move-off date.)

If you have been approved to live off campus previously, you do NOT need to reapply. Once approved off campus, your approval is good permanently, unless it is revoked due to violations of the Code of Student Conduct or academic/financial issues.

Please keep in mind that the University of Redlands is a residential campus and requires all undergraduate students to live on campus. A LIMITED number of additional students, mostly seniors, may be approved off campus. The University will not consider off campus petitions not meeting these criteria from students with fewer than 60 units, with GPAs lower than 3.0 (or Johnston equivalent), or students who apply in the middle of a semester or the academic year. All off campus petitions should be submitted prior to February 18 for consideration for the following academic year and will absolutely not be considered after the Fall semester begins. In other words, even if you do not wish to live off campus until the following spring semester, you must apply while the process is open during the Housing Selection and Placement process in the preceding spring.

The first round of off campus approvals will be announced on February 22, 2016 and will include almost exclusively students who meet an exemption or have senior status, satisfactory GPA, and good conduct standing.  If you are not approved on February 22, continue moving forward as an on campus student for 2016-2017. A small number of students will be placed on a waiting list for off campus housing, and some students may receive approval in May or July, 2016 for any remaining available off campus spaces. Unless you receive an official approval of your off campus petition, you must continue through the Room Selection process and secure a room. If you are approved later, you can elect to keep that room or reject it to move off campus. If you do not select housing and are not approved, you will be placed into a remaining on campus space after room selection.
