Supporting, Educating & Empowering Diverse Students

High School and College students come together on the chapel steps.

The Supporting, Educating and Empowering Diverse Students (S.E.E.D.S.) Mentorship Program is a collaborative initiative between local high schools and the University of Redlands.

U of R students started this program after visiting a local high school campus and finding a lack of support for students from first-generation and underserved communities. U of R student mentors work with sophomores and juniors to enhance their academic abilities and social skills.

The program is designed to work at developing a holistic sense of self among these students, helping to improve their self-confidence and support systems. Though academic assistance is important, the S.E.E.D.S. program is geared to help students gain a better understanding of themselves and their abilities. By helping high school students better understand themselves, we hope to empower them to become better students in striving for college. Through various activities and discussions, high school students are given the opportunity to explore higher education opportunities and their self-identities. This year, students worked on College Exploration projects where they selected a particular university, examined its admissions process and presented their findings.

S.E.E.D.S. is coordinated by U of R students with assistance from the Campus Diversity and Inclusion staff. U of R students meet regularly to plan and assess the program to make sure high school students’ needs are met. One of the program’s greatest benefits is the ability to address current issues and topics of concern to students. One student even commented, “In [the S.E.E.D.S.] program, I feel like my opinions matter.”
