Sustainable University of Redlands Farm

UoR Farm

University of Redlands' students preparing the farm to plant vegetable seeds.

The Sustainable University of Redlands Farm (SURF) is a natural farm that works to uphold the principles of sustainable agriculture. The three pillars of sustainability are environmental stewardship, social equity and economic stability. The farm uses organic practices like crop rotation, companion planting, composting and planting of green manures in areas to be laid fallow, or to rest. Food from the farm is donated to promote social equity and produce is sold to the campus food management company, Bon Appétit. The farm is used as an outdoor classroom and offers an annual May Term course in sustainable gardening.

The farm includes a Zuni Waffle Garden, a California Native Garden and offers a Campus Community Garden  with plots leasable to students, staff, faculty, and any organization on campus. Students can complete their community service requirement by leasing a 10’ by 20’ plot of land and growing produce to be donated to local nonprofits that work to alleviate hunger and homelessness in the community. Students can be hired as Gardeners in Residence if they have a work award. Gardeners in Residence work to maintain crops, the composting system and lead volunteer projects. If you would like to get involved with the farm or would like more information, please contact the Coordinator of Sustainability and Outreach at the Community Service Learning Office at 909-748-8838.

The Herb Garden

The Herb Garden was created in 2010 to supply the Bon Appétit kitchens with fresh herbs grown by students. One Gardener in Residence, work study student, cares for the 9 raised beds that contain basil, mint, thyme, rosemary, oregano and sage. For information about joining an herb community supported agriculture (CSA) system, please contact the Coordinator of Sustainability and Outreach at the Community Service Learning Office at 909-748-8838.

University of Redlands students contribute more than 100,000 hours of community service annually.
