In 1996, President Clinton introduced the "America Reads Challenge" to address the alarming fact that 30% to 40% of American children have inadequate reading abilities at the end of third grade. The President's proposal was intended to mobilize an army of college students as reading tutors. At Redlands, it has worked wonders!
Having further improved an already solid relationship with local schools, the University of Redlands has successfully embraced the America Reads Challenge since its inception. Federal work-study students serve as tutors helping children in the local school districts and non-profit agencies with their reading skills.
Over 100 students serve as reading tutors each academic year. Students serve at a variety of locations: Redlands Unified School District, Boys and Girls Club, Micah House and Think Together.
Generally, students who participate in the program as underclassmen continue to participate through their senior year making sustainable impacts on the lives of children, and enhancing their own development as well.
