Scholarships and Talent Awards

Students must remain in good academic standing to renew the award yearly. Talent scholarships may require that students audition or submit a portfolio or writing sample. Students should note that University policies limit the number and amount of institutional scholarships that students may receive. The most current financial aid award letter will always list your eligibility from multiple institutional sources.

Presidential Scholarships
Presidential Scholarships—$2,500 per year

Basis: Holistic review of application includes emphasis on course rigor and course load in a college prepratory curriculum with balance of leadership and community service. Recipients come from the top portion of the entering class and in the upper quartile of GPA, SAT and/or ACT Composite scores.

Submission: No deadline. Awards are automatically determined by the Office of Admissions.

Renewal policy: Academic good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Please note: Scholarships will be determined by information submitted at the time of application.

Achievement Awards
Achievement Awards—up to $16,500 per year

Basis: Awarded to students who have superior academic records and have demonstrated an unusual degree of leadership and accomplishment in school or community activities.

Submission: Apply to the university by Phase I (Nov. 15) and indicate on the Common Application supplement your interest in the award.

Renewal policy: Academic good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Please note: Awards will be determined by information submitted at the time of application.

Art Awards
Art Awards—up to $3,500 per year

Basis: Departmental determination based upon slide samples of work (no portfolio, please).

Submission: Apply to the University by Phase I (Nov. 15), and indicate on the application your interest in the award. Examples of your work should be uploaded to the Art Department's SlideRoom.

Renewal policy: Academic good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA and departmental review of work; major required.

Creative Writing Awards
Creative Writing Awards—up to $3,500 per year

Basis: Awards, determined by the department, are based upon one of the following: Five poems; two short stories; a chapter from a novel; two personal essays; and/or three examples of literary journalism: reviews of books, movies, music, etc.

Submission: Apply to the University by Phase I (Nov. 15), indicate on the application your interest in the award and include writing samples of your work.

Renewal policy: Academic good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA; major required.

Music Awards
Music Awards—up to $10,000 per year

Basis: Departmental determination based upon auditions for those living within 200 miles or tapes beyond 200 miles; separate music application required.  Call School of Music at (909) 748-8014.

Submission: Music awards are offered as a result of auditions or the evaluation of tapes. Although offered on a "rolling" basis, music candidates are advised to apply by Phase I (Nov. 15), as well as contact the School of Music for an audition or submission of tape. Please indicate on the application your interest in the music award.

Renewal policy: Academic good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA with requirement of private music study and participation in major conducted ensemble.

Theatre Awards
Theatre Awards—up to $3,500 per year

Basis: Awards, determined by the department, are based upon review of the student's University admission essay and theatre résumé. Optional: Students interested in performance may submit an audition DVD that illustrates performance work (maximum 3 minutes, no in-person auditions). Students interested in design and production may submit a portfolio in the form of annotated slide samples (that indicate student's role in realizing the work).

Submission: Apply to the University by Phase I (Nov.15), indicate on the application your interest in the award, include a résumé that documents the breadth and depth of your experience in theatre and (optional) slide samples of production work or performance DVD, if you choose to do so.

Renewal policy: Academic good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA and department review of work; major required.
