What is the purpose of Summer Piano Camp and  what will I do there?

The focus of the University of Redlands Summer Piano Camp is enrichment.  The goal is to enhance your enjoyment of the piano and to foster a deeper love and appreciation for music while working together with a supportive community of teachers and students who share your same passion.

There will be chances to explore intriguing new areas such as piano and drama, piano and multi-media or keyboard through the ages.  You will have an opportunity to develop skills in improvisation, sight reading, and ear training, or even to discover more effective ways to practice.  You will experience the great fun of piano ensemble, that is, playing duets with a friend.  Some of you will have the opportunity to perform in a master class situation and get serious feedback from university professors.

What kind of pianos will I have access to?

The University of Redlands recently acquired new Steinway grand pianos for the piano practice rooms.  In addition, there are large Steinway grands in three of the performance venues and some beautiful 9 foot German Grand Pianos in other performance halls.   You will have a chance to perform on all of these pianos during the Summer Piano Camp.  In addition the University of Redlands School of Music owns three harpsichords, two clavichords, and several pipe organs including the massive organ in Memorial Chapel.  During the Summer Piano Camp there will be workshops that will allow you to experience these historic instruments.

What are the audition requirements if I wish to perform in one of the Master Classes?

You will need to play a piece by a classical composer from any period, Baroque through Contemporary.  This piece must be memorized.   The length of the piece is not important, but you must have the score with you.

Who are the teachers?

You have the opportunity to work with first-rate faculty.  These teachers are highly regarded professional musicians who love to teach and want to work with you this summer!   Click here for a list of who they are.

Will there be a culminating event?

Yes, there will be a final concert for your family and friends on Friday, August 1 at 4 p.m.  This will take place in the Frederick Loewe Performance Hall.

The concert will include a demonstration of projects completed during the week, solo and ensemble performances and a monster piano piece for 8 pianists at four concert grand pianos.
