In a disappointing (and surprising!) last-minute maneuver, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a deal negotiated between his office and the state legislature to preserve Cal Grant funding at the current rate for the budget year 2012-2013.
Governor Brown’s decision on June 28, 2012 imposes a 5 percent cut to Cal Grants for both existing and incoming Cal Grant eligible students. While disappointing, this is a considerably better deal than his originally proposed 44 percent cut.
The University has decided to make up the 5 percent difference for students returning this September, consistent with its longstanding policy to make certain that once enrolled the University does everything reasonable to ensure the retention and graduation of its students. Whether the University will be able to fund the difference in future years has yet to be determined.
The University will not make up the 5 percent reduction for entering students because aid offers are competitive even with the reduction.
The University of Redlands, along with other members of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AICCU), expects to open new negotiations with the Governor and legislature on this issue for the next fiscal year. Specifically, the University will work on new funding methodologies to assure affordable access to quality higher education.
