Public Safety Advisory - Dec. 3, 2013

Subject: Safety Advisory - Recent Thefts On-Campus

During the holiday season, it is unfortunately quite common for incidents of theft and crimes of opportunity to significantly increase. This holiday season has thus far proven to be no exception to that trend. Over the past three days, the Department of Public Safety and Redlands Police Department have arrested four individuals for separate incidents of stealing or attempting to steal bicycles from the campus. In addition, we have recently experienced multiple break-ins of vehicles parked on campus where the soft convertible tops were cut in order to allow unlawful entry and theft of contents contained within the cars. The Redlands Police Department has reported to Public Safety that this is a current and recurring pattern of criminal activity occurring throughout the city. Furthermore, yesterday afternoon, a backpack was stolen from an unsecured office in Duke Hall, which was only momentarily left unoccupied. The backpack was later located discarded in the grass between Fraternity Row and Alumni House, which is the same general vicinity as two of the three vehicle break-ins noted above.

As a reminder, the University Community is urged to take precautions and to enhance the security of their parked vehicles and personal belongings.

• Lock the doors of your vehicle when leaving it unattended.

• Refrain from leaving any items of value in plain sight within your vehicle.

• Park in well lighted areas to the best extent possible.

• Lock the doors to your office or residence hall room when they are unoccupied,   even if only for brief periods of time.

• Immediately report any suspicious person or activities to Public Safety.

Our highest priority remains the safety and security of our campus community members. If you have any questions or information, please contact Public Safety at (909) 748-8888 or ext. 8888 from any campus phone.
