DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Director of Residence Life and Housing, the Resident Director (RD) provides students with resources and experiences that complement academics to create and maintain a “sense of community.” The RD also serves in half-time collateral assignments within the Student Life Division supporting the Student Leadership and Involvement Center, Campus Diversity and Inclusion and/or Wellness & Intramurals. Assignments may be supervised by a member of the Student Life department and are an integral part of the department team that supplements the living environment for all students living in residences on campus.
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manages and supervises all Residence Life and Housing (RLH) staff and functions.
- Manages the residence hall(s) (e.g. reports damage, conducts safety checks, advises community assistants in submitting work requests, etc.);
- Actively plans, participates in, and assesses programming efforts both within the residence halls and areas of collateral assignment;
- Conducts weekly staff meetings to address programmatic needs, student concerns, community-building, and other issues;
- Advises student organizations and Community Assistant Committees; and
- Attends, instructs, and actively participates in all scheduled trainings prior to the start of school.
- Identifies students with personal, behavioral or developmental concerns and refers them to appropriate resources for consultation and assistance; writes appropriate communication records; adjudicates student conduct cases within the residence halls as delegated by the Director of Student Conduct; enforces all campus policies, hall rules and regulations; develops strong interpersonal relationships, social interactions, and community cohesiveness between staff, residents, and University students; participates in special assignments, annual events and projects as assigned through Student Life: including, housing assignment process for summer, vacation, new and returning students.
- Supervises two (2) to five (5) Community Assistants; conducts annual performance evaluations on staff and provides feedback for colleagues and supervisors for their annual reports; assists in the organization and development of Residence Hall staff selections and actively participates in the selection process.
- Participates in the Administrator On-Call and Student Leadership and Involvement Party Duty Rotation and responds to crisis situations.
- Attends appropriate Division and department meetings as required; prepares monthly reports and other paperwork and related duties as assigned.
Additionally, dependent upon collateral assignment duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitates programming efforts for the Student Leadership and Involvement Center and/or Campus Diversity and Inclusion; advises student clubs, organizations, and subgroups of student government; coordinates leadership activities and awards ceremonies; supports retention efforts and diversity education activities.
- Coordinates and enhances the wellness theme and wellness activities for North Hall community members.
- Facilitates Intramural Sports; advertises sports and schedules, schedules games, facilitates informational sessions, hires, schedules, and supervises student workers; develops and expands Intramurals to new sports and programming that supports Intramural Athletes on our campus.
- Plans and executes campus-wide wellness programming for students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required plus a minimum of six months of similar student related work (Community Assistant, Assistant Resident Hall Coordinator, etc.) and/or work performed with community based organizations. The ideal candidate is committed to an understanding of the values of higher education, student and community development, and diversity. Candidate must have the sensitivity and ability to work with the traditional college age student, advise staff, develop and implement programs, produce effective outcomes, work effectively both individually and with groups, use independent judgment and display decision-making ability. Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and staff is necessary and will require attendance at evening and weekend events, as well as overnight retreats and training. Experience using the Internet, e-mail and competence using a variety of Windows-based computer programs is desired. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
