Pokorny Seminar

Performances open to the public will be held throughout the week beginning June 7

REDLANDS, CA (June 2, 2011)— The fourth annual Pokorny Low Brass Seminar, an intensive seminar on orchestral performance named for and led by the renowned tuba player Gene Pokorny of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will be held at the University of Redlands June 7-12.

Pokorny, a University of Redlands alumnus of the class of 1975, holds the Arnold Jacobs Principal Tuba Chair in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, to which he was appointed by Sir Georg Solti in 1988. He will be joined at the University of Redlands by bass trombonist Randall Hawes from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, tenor trombonists Michael Mulcahy of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Tim Higgins of the San Francisco Symphony and host Andrew Glendening, the dean of the University of Redlands School of Music.

The seminar consists of an intensive series of masterclasses, lectures, rehearsals and performances that focus on preparing for a successful career as a professional musician. This year’s participants include musicians from four continents, students from most of the major conservatories, college professors and professional musicians from outstanding ensembles around the world, including the San Antonio Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic, Oregon Symphony, Delaware Symphony and the United States Marine Band.

Glendening, the School of Music dean, said the Pokorny Seminar is unique in that it deals with far more than the technical aspects of brass playing.

“The amazingly diverse experiences of the faculty, performers and auditors provide inspiration to those who are starting their careers, and a renewed creativity to those who are established professionals. Since the faculty and students steer the curriculum collaboratively, the outcomes always exceed our expectations,” Glendening said.

Performances open to the public will include four faculty recitals, a low brass ensemble concert and the participant’s recital.
