Educators and Innovators to Discuss Student College and Career Readiness
REDLANDS, CA (MAY 5, 2011) – A symposium on college and career readiness May 19 at the University of Redlands will tackle tough questions about how students are readied for college and careers, what skills are most important and policy and program changes needed to prepare all students. The symposium is sponsored by the Center for Educational Justice at the University of Redlands’ School of Education.
“Too often young people are unprepared for choices about careers and college. Teens, including the most vulnerable youth, are expected to progress to adulthood with limited life-skills and without programs in place to guide them on this path,” said Dr. Jose Lalas, director of the Center for Educational Justice. “We must address how we prepare all students for college and careers as we seek educational justice. Our panelists will bring courage and hands-on experience to this discussion.” The evening will feature several speakers, including:
- Carol Ann Franklin, director, Partnership for Youth in Foster Care
- Bernadette “Bunny” Pinchback, Office of the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, West End /East Valley Foster Youth Service
- Keith Walters, assistant dean of the Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education, California Baptist University
- Jay Westover, chief learning officer, InnovatEd
“Educational justice means every child, no matter what type of home he or she comes from, should have access to quality instruction, resources and other educational opportunities,” said Lalas, who organized and will moderate the symposium. “The path to adulthood is littered with roadblocks and distractions for even the most directed teenagers, and is even more tenuous for at-risk youth. There is much work to be done to prepare the next generation to fully participate in the American dream of a college education and a career.”
The evening seminar is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the University of Redlands in Gregory Hall, room 161. The event is open to teachers, administrators, aides, private and public education and youth services professionals and those interested in educational justice. The School of Education at the University of Redlands has a unique focus on educational justice, from the doctoral level with its Ed.D. in Educational Justice to courses and programs throughout the School. Its Center for Educational Justice sponsors symposiums throughout the year and an annual conference each July to explore educational issues.
