Careers in caring

Brian and Sarah Cain are not only married to each other, but are also University of Redlands alumni who proudly graduated with their own MBAs at the same time in 2009. Sarah is an executive director at Stater Brothers, a member of the Fortune 500 and one of the largest grocery companies in the Southwest U.S.

“I work for and helped establish Stater Brothers Charities, the giving arm of Stater Brothers Markets,” says Sarah Cain. In 2009, the company contributed over $15 million to local non-profit organizations to combat some of the most critical needs in the Southern California region.

Sarah’s husband and fellow former Bulldog, Brian, is the Director of Marketing at Reche Canyon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, a nursing home in Colton, California.

Advancing their careers to better help others

It’s no coincidence that two compassionate people who are both in the business of caring for others would wind up being married to each other. The question inquiring minds want to know is—what made both Sarah and Brian decide to pursue their MBAs at the same university?

The decision was an easy one, says Sarah. “The University of Redlands is a well known and highly established institution.” Husband and fellow MBA, Brian, agrees. “As a credible institution, [Redlands] provided the knowledge and tools to further my career.”

They both stress the importance of the quality and depth of professors at Redlands. “Having actual business professionals as my professors was an essential component to my education,” explains Sarah. “The professors, having worked for major corporations themselves, were able to give real world examples rather than just theories… and teach you how to succeed.”

Even outside of their respective careers, success for this Bulldog couple involves helping others. “Both Brian and I volunteer with the junior high kids at Trinity Church in Redlands,” says Sarah. “We have also participated in several international missions trips to help third-world countries gain better access to education.”

In another not-too-surprising coincidence, both Brian and Sarah list the same Winston Churchill quote as their personal favorite: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

To which we can only affirm, it’s an impressive life that Sarah and Brian Cain have built together.

Do you know the Och Tamale?

The non-sensical Och Tamale chant was originally titled the "Psalm of Collegiate Thanksgiving."
