University of Redlands to Host Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Dinner and Discussion Focusing on the Ethical Challenges of Leadership
REDLANDS, CA– In a special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day presentation hosted by the Banta Center for Business, Ethics, and Society at the University of Redlands, the challenges of ethical leadership and what people want from leaders such as King, Gandhi and Nelson Mandela will be discussed on Monday, Jan. 17.
The evening, which will feature a dinner and discussion beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the Redlands campus, will be moderated by Jeffery Smith, Director of the Banta Center, and will feature keynote speaker Joanne Ciulla, a professor, author and Washington Post columnist.
“Leadership at its heart must embrace and articulate the best of ethics,” said Smith. “Martin Luther King, Jr. provides us a lasting case study in courage and virtue. Business leader or student, we all have something to gain from an examination of King’s actions as a heroic leader in the fight for civil rights.”
Ciulla is visiting the School of Business campus in Torrance from her post as professor and Coston Family Chair in Leadership and Ethics at the University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies. She has held academic appointments at Harvard Business School, the Wharton School, and Oxford University and has held the UNESCO Chair in Leadership Studies at the United Nations International Academy in Jordan.
Ciulla has written extensively on leadership ethics, business ethics, and the philosophy of work. She recently published “Leadership at the Crossroads” and also writes a column for the Washington Post, “On Leadership.”
The complimentary buffet dinner opens at 5:30 p.m. with discussion to follow at 6:15 p.m. in the Casa Loma Room at the University. The event is free and open to the public and reservations are required by Wednesday, Jan. 12, by calling (909) 748-8769 or e-mailing Vanessa_siliezar@redlands.edu
