U of R Concert Band to Perform

Both band classics and new works will be performed during an upcoming concert by the University of Redlands Concert Band.

The band will perform a winter concert Thursday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

The band, which is under the direction of David Scott, will perform Aaron Copland's An Outdoor Overture, as well as a new work by Brett William Dietz entitled Shards of Glass.

The band also is set to play classics by composers including Gordon Jacob, Robert Jager and Donald H. White. The band also will play the Overture to the Lerner and Loewe musical Brigadoon.

The University of Redlands Concert Band is a 65-piece wind and percussion group. The ensemble is open to all university students. The band performs two concerts a semester and plays selections including standard band repertoire, marches, Broadway show favorites and contemporary band works

The director, Scott, has been a trumpeter and teacher in the Los Angeles area since 1983. He is principal trumpet of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra, the Riverside County Philharmonic and the San Bernardino Symphony. He also is the personnel manager for the Redlands Symphony.

There are more than 1,700 trees on the University of Redlands campus.

In April 2010, it was designated a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Redlands is among just three other colleges or universities in California to receive this designation.
