Bulldogs to Serve Across the Nation for the Second Year

March 26, 2009 -

University of Redlands alumni and their families will help organize donated food and clothing, provide care packages for military personnel serving in Iraq, and remove trash along a river bank as part of a nationwide service event that includes 19 projects in 15 cities.

The second annual University of Redlands Bulldogs in Service day is set for Saturday, April 4.

Five events will be held in the Inland cities of Redlands and Riverside. Events also are scheduled in the California communities of Newport Beach, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles and South Bay. Additional events are planned for Denver, Portland, New Orleans, Austin, Texas, Oahu, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Seattle and Salzburg in Austria.

The event is structured to allow alumni to see how much difference just one day of volunteer work can make, according to Margi Buller, chairperson of Bulldogs in Service.

"We definitely look for substantial projects that can be completed in one day or less," Buller said. "There is a great sense of satisfaction that comes with coming together as a group of alumni and seeing significant results after a day of labor. It's an exciting, encouraging sort of experience."

In the Inland area, three projects are planned in Redlands. One group will sort donated clothing, canned goods and books at Family Services Association of Redlands, located at 612 Lawton St. in Redlands. The event is set for 9 a.m.

Another Redlands project will be held at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 1540 Alessandro Rd. in Redlands. The group will be cleaning grave markers and raking and eliminating weeds, beginning at 10 a.m. A third group will participate in the annual Save the “R” hike. Volunteers will meet at the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel, located at 1200 E. Colton Ave., at 7 a.m., before riding up the mountain and hiking to the R to clean up the area.

In Riverside, volunteers will spend the morning supporting the Riverside Salvation Army, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Downtown Riverside Salvation Army Headquarters. The headquarters is located at 3695 First St. in Riverside. Volunteers may be packaging meals for needy families or assembling toiletry kits. Other needs will be addressed by the volunteers as requested.

Another group will serve at Riverside Second Harvest Food Bank, located at 2950 Jefferson St. #B in Riverside. Volunteers will sort and evaluate food items and prepare them for distribution. The event begins at 9 a.m.

Last year, about 400 alumni and friends volunteered in communities during the university’s inaugural day of service. This year, additional sites have been added, giving more alumni an opportunity to serve.

The University of Redlands has repeatedly garnered national attention for its commitment to community service and in 2007 received the highest honor on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
