Redlands Chapel Singers Gear Up For California Tour

After an intense year of performances, the University of Redlands Chapel Singers is getting ready for its annual tour. From April 18- 26, the Chapel Singers will be presenting more than ten concerts and educational workshops throughout California.

To launch this series of performances, the Chapel Singers will be offering a free concert at Redlands United Church of Christ on April 18 at 7:30 p.m.

The tour repertoire will include a vast selection of sacred and secular music featuring works by Bruckner, Duruflé, Lauridsen, Poulenc, Rachmaninoff, Tavener, Whitacre, as well as folk songs and spirituals.

The 28-voice ensemble under the direction of School of Music professor Jean-Sébastien Vallée has a tradition of musical excellence and has toured extensively in the United States as well as internationally.

Originally from Canada, Jean-Sébastien Vallée is an active conductor, clinician and adjudicator. Before coming to Redlands, Vallée conducted more than 15 ensembles in Canada and the United States including the University of California Chamber Singers, Early Music Ensemble, New Music Ensemble, and the University of Illinois University Chorus and Opera Studio. At the University of Redlands, Vallée conducts the Chapel Singers, the University Choir, and teaches conducting.

Another University of Redlands choral group, the Madrigal Singers, is also gearing up for a tour. The Madrigal Singers has been selected to participate in "Festival 500, Sharing the Voices," a celebrated international non-competitive festival of choral music held July 2-12 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The Redlands choir was one of more than 150 choirs that auditioned to perform at the international festival; only 30 choirs were ultimately selected to perform.

The prestigious festival is accompanied by an academic symposium on the phenomenon of singing. The event brings together singers, conductors and scholars representing a variety of countries and cultures worldwide.
