Students Spend May Term in Ecuador

Redlands students will spend May serving disadvantaged students at a school in Ecuador, conducting research on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona, and exploring art, culture and capitalism in the Baltic States.
May Term is designed to allow students to do in-depth work in one course. Often, students travel abroad or to destinations throughout the U.S. Travel, classroom instruction and community service typically are combined.
Senior Marjorie Mora said she enjoys May Term because it gives her an opportunity to focus on one subject and to get the most out of the class. In the past, she has participated in Study Abroad programs and community service. This year, she is taking a communicative disorders class on learning disabilities.
"It's way less stressful than it is during the rest of the year," said Mora, a communicative disorders major from Pomona. "That means I can focus more on one thing. The class starts quickly and ends quickly, but I enjoy it."
For math major Carissa Mendoza, May Term offers an opportunity to explore an area she might not otherwise study. The Corona resident is taking a class in Japanese animation.
"I like to try to use the time to take a class I really enjoy – not just something I'm taking because I have to," the senior said. During May Term 2009, students will:
- Complete a four-week internship in animal care at the nation's largest no-kill animal sanctuary, located in Kanab, Utah. Students will spend four days a week feeding and providing water to animals, cleaning kennels and exercising and training dogs.
- Explore economic and cultural changes in China. Students will visit foreign and home-grown companies, stock exchanges, universities, museums and other cultural and historical sites. Students will participate in evening seminars to share their travel experiences and reflections on China's socioeconomic issues.
- Visit concentration camps in Germany. Students will be given opportunities to share their insights on the realities of the holocaust, and to share what they have learned and how they have been affected by seeing the camps and other historical locations first-hand.
- Study patterns of consumption in Paris. Students will experience and observe consumption of food, electricity and other products. In the process, students will discuss how consumption affects the health of our environment as well as ideas of social belonging and inequality.
- Conduct volunteer work in Ecuador, while also studying the area's art and culture. Students will work with disadvantaged children and also participate in trips designed to showcase the geographic and sociological differences that exist in the area.
- Help establish a community development center in a Cambodian village. Students also will work directly with village children and participate in weekend site-seeing visits.
