Week 1: A Dress for the Red Carpet

In Thursday’s premier of the sixth season of the reality TV show, Project Runway, Malvin Vien ’07 was calm, cool and collected, even when supermodel Heidi Klum complimented him on his hairstyle.

The premier show took the 16 designers to Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre, where Chief Executive Officer of Liz Clairborne Tim Gunn presented them with their first challenge: to create a red carpet design that demonstrates true innovation and represents their point of view as a designer.

With a $200 budget and a limited amount of time to turn their creative visions into runway masterpieces, the contestants raced the clock to complete the challenge.

Malvin seemed focused as he “designed a piece to make someone feel completely treasured,” he said.

Contestants’ designs were judged by Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and surprise guest judge Lindsay Lohan.

Malvin was one of the 15 contestants who qualified to continue on to next week’s show. Hear Malvin's inspiration behind his design and bid for the dress here.

Watch next Thursday at 10 p.m. as Malvin and the other remaining designers create a look for a surprise celebrity.

There are more than 1,700 trees on the University of Redlands campus.

In April 2010, it was designated a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Redlands is among just three other colleges or universities in California to receive this designation.
