Bulldog Football Celebrates 100 Years

You may have heard that this year kicks off the 100th season of Bulldog Football, but did you know the head of the athletics faculty committee was allowed to play as a member during the Bulldog’s first season?

Visiting archivist Nathan Gonzales recently wrote about this and other facts chronicling the 1910 University of Redlands football team in an article for the Redlands Daily Facts, “The First Year of Bulldog Football.”

Gonzales’ job as visiting archivist allows him access to publications, photos and items dating back to the university’s inception in 1907. For the article, he pulled together information from a then, brand-new publication by Redlands students called The Spectrum.

Gonzales had particularly kind words for the trailblazers who were members of the university’s first-ever football team: “This year we honor the legacy left by 18 young men striving for victory and undeterred by defeat.”
