University of Redlands to Honor Veterans

Veterans Appreciation Week will be observed from Nov. 8-15

REDLANDS,┬áNov. 4, 2013– The University of Redlands has a rich tradition of supporting our military and veteran students and their families. It is a history that goes back to the University’s early days and World War I. As part of Veterans Appreciation Week, the public is invited to participate in the National Roll Call on Nov. 11 and to attend the “Veterans Service = Veterans Preference” speech by Dr. Shawn Lum on Nov. 13.

Veterans Appreciation Week will kick off on Nov. 8 when 5,000 flag pins donated by the San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs Office and 5,000 yellow ribbons will be distributed on campus to show support and appreciation for veterans.

On Nov. 11, the University of Redlands is participating in the National Roll Call from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at University Hall. The National Roll Call is an event that many colleges and universities nationwide participate in honor to those who have chosen to answer the call and put on a uniform in defense or our nation and it freedoms. As part of Roll Call, the participating schools observe a minute of silence at 11 a.m. P.S.T. on Nov. 11. After the moment of silence, the roll call will begin for the City of Redlands Hometown Heroes and students, staff, administration and faculty.

Dr. Shawn Lum, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Firehorse Enterprise will deliver the speech “Veterans Service = Veterans Preference” on Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. in the Casa Loma Room. “It is an honor and a privilege for the University of Redlands to show the deserved appreciation to our veterans. Our men and women in uniform have sacrificed their lives, their families and their homes and we invite the public to honor and thank them for their service,” said Cheryl Kleeman, Veterans Affairs Specialist at the University of Redlands.
