Memorial Golf Tournament
The second annual Scott Lindsay Memorial Golf Tournament Nov. 8 will raise money for a scholarship fund that helps School of Business students see the world.
“The cause is a great one,” Karen Kraker, project specialist at the School of Business, said. “The study abroad scholarships help students who want to travel, but may not be able to come up with all of the funding.”
Scott Lindsay had deep ties to the University of Redlands–he was a two-time graduate, an adjunct faculty member, and part of the Whitehead Leadership Society and School of Business Alumni Board. He was killed in a workplace shooting in December 2011, and the Scott Lindsay Study Abroad Scholarship Fund was set up to honor his life and love of visiting other countries.
“Scott traveled to India with our study abroad, and for him it was a life-changing event,” Kraker said. “When he came back he shared with family and other students that change in him and what he saw. It opened his eyes to a new world and experiences, and that was something he hoped other students would get to do.”
Kraker was able to see first-hand the importance of studying abroad during a recent trip to Italy and Austria with a School of Business master’s program.
“We had a student who without funding would not have been able to go,” she said. “The things she saw and did enlightened her and excited her about traveling abroad and the concept of international business as a whole. It broadened her educational experience; it’s not so much theory anymore, she actually saw the practice.”
The tournament will take place at the Upland Hills Country Club, and will be a scramble format open to golfers of all skill levels. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and the shotgun start at noon. A dinner and reception will follow at 6 p.m.
“It’s not super competitive,” Kraker said. “It’s more about getting out there and having a good time and networking. It’s an opportunity to meet people we might not meet during our day-to-day routine, and the banquet at the end of the night is a nice time to share experiences.”
