Theatre Arts Season
University of Redlands Theatre Arts Department announces 2013-2014 production season
Featuring works by Hollman, Kotis, Lowry, Chekhov and Ives
REDLANDS, Oct. 1, 2013—The University of Redlands Theatre Arts Department announces its 2013-2014 season of main stage productions with four plays that reflect on sustainable societies, economies, environments and relationships. The plays to be performed at Glenn Wallichs Theatre and Loewe Theatre are:
- Urinetown, the Musical by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis
- The Giver by Lois Lowry
- The Seagull by Anton Chekhov
- All in the Timing by David Ives
The first show of the season is the Tony Award-winning Urinetown, the Musical by Mark Holman and Greg Kotis. This irreverent musical comedy is produced in association with the University of Redlands Environmental Studies Department.
Imagine a show with the sensibility of Looney Toons, South Park or The Simpsons and add a Brechtian narrator that tracks the love story of a boy and girl from opposite sides of the tracks. Filled with hilarious gags, exaggerated characters, Urinetown is filled with songs that honor and spoof the history of musical theatre. Despite its sophisticated impertinence, its central themes challenge assumptions about the sustainability of water, social justice and love.
After the Fri., Nov. 15 show, there will be a discussion on water reclamation with the show’s Director Chris Beach, and Environmental Studies Faculty members Wendy McIntyre and Stuart Noble-Goodman. V.I.P. seating will be available for this show.
