Ensemble XXI, a Redlands Camerata directed by Jeffrey H. Rickard, will present A Service of Choral Evensong at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Memorial Chapel.
This free event is the first Choral Evensong for the 2013-14 season.
“Evensong is more than just a musical service,” Peter Tupou of the Chaplain’s Office said. “The music is beautiful, but there’s no place like the Chapel when it comes to singing acapella in the way it warms the sound.”
Ensemble XXI is a choral ensemble of more than 20 people, specializing in the presentation of choral Evensong in the Anglican tradition. The group was formed in 2008 by alumni of the Community Chorus of Redlands, Trinity Episcopal Church Choir, and the University of Redlands, and in addition to Evensong performs madrigals and contemporary jazz.
This service will include anthems by Rickard (“Prayer of St. Augustine”), Susan LaBarr (“Grace Before Sleep”), Robert W. Lehman (“I Will Arise and Go to Jesus”), Knut Nystedt (“Kyrie”), and Michael John Trotta (“I Shall See”) and choral settings by Rickard and William Child (“Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis”).
“Many people come from all over to listen to Evensong and Compline, the musical services we provide free to the community,” Tupou said. “I think Berthold Auerbach explained it perfectly when he said, ‘Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.’ That’s why I go sit in the Chapel and let myself be rejuvenated.”
