University of Redlands appoints new Director of Spatial Studies

 Steven Moore will lead the development of spatial curriculum and research

REDLANDS, May 21, 2013 – Following a national search, the University of Redlands announced the appointment of Dr. Steven Moore as the Director of Spatial Studies, beginning July 29, 2013. In this position, Moore will provide leadership, coordination and support for spatial curriculum and research at the University of Redlands and for outreach to communities, businesses and professional organizations involved with spatial curriculum and research.

Moore will oversee the University’s Learning Spatially across the Curriculum (LENS) initiative. He will work closely with and provide support for a variety of academic programs such as the MS GIS Program, the new Spatial Studies minor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Redlands InstituteInstitute for Spatial and Economic Analysis (ISEA) and Center for Business GIS and Spatial Analysis in the School of Business, and for the Spatial Literacy emphasis in the School of Education. Moore will also expand outreach and enhance the University's visibility in spatial curriculum and research to communities, business, and professional organizations, including the University's longstanding partnership with Esri, an international supplier of Geographic Information System (GIS) software and geodatabase management applications based in Redlands.

Since 2003 Moore has served as CEO of Science Approach, a small business that develops discovery-based instructional materials for classrooms in K-16 and provides professional development opportunities for teachers. Under Dr. Moore's leadership, Science Approach has specialized in helping teachers and students use computer-based visualization tools such as digital image analysis and geographic information systems (GIS) to engage students in self-motivated learning about biology, biotechnology, environmental science, geography, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean science, social studies, technology, watershed management, and other content areas addressed in K-12 schools and universities.

Dr. Moore served as Executive Director of the Center for Image Processing in Education in Tucson, Arizona from 2000-2008. He received his B.A. in Biology from Southern Illinois University, an M.B.A. in Human Resources Management and Accounting from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in Renewable Natural Resources Studies and Sociology from the University of Arizona.
