Outstanding graduating athletes Tristan Kirk ’13 and Lauren Zehner ’13 were named the Frank Serrao Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

The formal announcement was made during the Honors Convocation April 19.

“They represent the best of our student-athletes,” Jeff Martinez, director of athletics and physical education, said. “Both of them are wonderful young people who will be successful in their next endeavors, but I believe will also always be great University of Redlands alumni, ambassadors and friends.”

Kirk, a Redlands native, played on the basketball team for four years, was named All-SCIAC three times, and scored over 1,000 points for the Bulldogs. A government major, he plans on attending law school.

“He has contributed to the success of the program since the day he arrived here,” Martinez said. “He has really helped promote the excitement of Bulldog basketball in our community. He plays very hard, always hustles and is a true joy to watch.”

Zehner came to the University of Redlands from Portland, and earned plenty of accolades as a member of the swim team. She earned All-American honorable mention and multiple SCIAC honors, and was named Team MVP. A communicative disorders major, she hopes to work with children in a clinic.

“She set some lofty goals when she arrived and met the vast majority of them,” Martinez said. “She has a great personality, is outgoing, always smiling, and is also a hard worker. She and her twin sister Lindsay are the last of four siblings to attend the University of Redlands, and I have enjoyed getting to know all of them and appreciate the long-distance support of the family, especially her parents.”

Coaches are invited to nominate any graduating senior for the award, as long as the student meets specific criteria. Each head athletic coach, the head athletic trainer, the fitness center director/head strength and conditioning coach, and the sports information director/senior woman administrator have one vote for each award, which is named after the late iconic football coach and physical education professor.

“I personally knew Frank Serrao...I am confident that Coach Serrao would have enjoyed watching both Tristan and Lauren compete, and also been extremely proud of their accomplishments and their selection for this award,” Martinez said.

The non-sensical Och Tamale chant was originally titled the "Psalm of Collegiate Thanksgiving."
