University of Redlands to hold Inauguration ceremony for new President

Ralph W. Kuncl to be formally inaugurated

REDLANDS, Feb. 14, 2013 – Ralph W. Kuncl will be inaugurated as the 11th president of University of Redlands on Wednesday‚ Feb. 20, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Memorial Chapel of the Redlands campus at 2:30 p.m. and it will be followed by a reception at Orton Center. The public is invited to attend both events.

On June 2, 2012, Dr. Kuncl was selected president and officially joined the institution in August 2012. He came to Redlands from the University of Rochester where he served as provost and executive vice president, and as a professor of neurology and of brain and cognitive sciences.
Dr. Kuncl earned his A.B. from Occidental College, magna cum laude with election to Phi Beta Kappa; his Ph.D. in experimental pathology at the University of Chicago, Division of Biological Sciences; and his M.D. at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine.

Inaugural reflections will be read by Arthur Svenson, David Boies professor of government at University of Redlands; Sona Karentz Andrews, provost at Portland State University; Thomas Jackson, president emeritus at University of Rochester; and Marlene Ross, former senior advisor for the American Council on Education. Special guests expected to be in attendance include 37 delegates from other universities and colleges from around the country.

The music for the Inauguration of Ralph W. Kuncl will include compositions from Bach, Strauss, and Vivaldi among others and will be performed by more than 80 singers and musicians from the School of Music at the University of Redlands. To mark the occasion of Dr. Kuncl’s investiture, Professor Anthony Suter composed the anthem Fanfare for Number Eleven that will be performed by the University Brass Ensemble. Passionate about music himself, Dr. Kuncl has more than 20 years’ experience as a vocal performer in the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and other ensemble groups.
