CDI Presents Zach Wahls

University of Redlands Campus Diversity and Inclusion Present Zach Wahls

Viral video sensation and LGBT activist to speak at The University of Redlands

REDLANDS, Feb. 4, 2013 – University of Redlands Campus Diversity and Inclusion along with Associated Students of Redlands (ASUR) Convocations and Lectures will host LGBT activist Zach Wahls at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18.

On Jan. 31, 2011, Zach Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public hearing regarding a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa. The then-19-year-old son of a same-sex couple, Wahls proudly proclaimed, “the sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.” A video of his testimony posted on YouTube went viral. It had more that 1.5 million views within two weeks and exceeded 15 million views by April 2012.

"The Economist" described the hearing as “ineffective conservative political theatre” and noted that “Whatever it was Iowa House Republicans were trying to achieve, it certainly wasn’t to offer a soapbox to Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old engineering student at the University of Iowa. It introduced the video of Wahl’s testimony with the words “This is what it looks like to win an argument.” His book (with Bruce Littlefield), My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a Family, was published in April 2012.

This event is free and open to the public.
