University of Redlands Theatre Arts Department presents "Cabaret" by Masteroff, Kander & Ebb
Imagine a time of hope and change, a time that followed war and economic collapse, a time that promised social and political equality and justice. No, it’s not America’s historic 2008 presidential election; it’s the 1920s, the heady times of the Weimar Republic in Berlin, Germany just before the Nazis rise to power.
"Cabaret," the musical by Masteroff, Kander and Ebb, is based on the Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood, who as a young American writer struggling to find his voice, spent a few years in Berlin and witnessed the social unrest in the streets and the decadent denial of the city’s night life.
Filled with unforgettable songs like "Money Makes the World Go Round," "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," and "Cabaret," this musical reached international acclaim in the 1970s film of the same name, starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey with infamous choreography by Bob Fosse. Central to any interpretation of "Cabaret" is its cautionary message about the danger of “not speaking out” against acts of injustice.
The University of Redlands Theatre Arts Department’s production of "Cabaret" is directed by Chris Beach, with musical direction by Patrick Doran-Sheeran, choreography by Kirsten Johanson, scenic design by Nephelie Andonyadis, costume design by Redlands senior Cambria Chichi, hair design by Deborah Bradford, makeup design by Redlands freshman Katie Bettini, lighting design by Trevor Norton, video design by Redlands senior Sarah Perez, props design by Redlands senior Leah Ramillano, stage managed by Redlands senior Mandy Nussbaum, and assistant stage managed by Redlands sophomore Willie Michiels.
