Steffany Ellis has always been an advocate for a personalized approach to education. Today she’s a living example of it. Even before completing her teaching credential at the University Redlands, she was offered a position with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

She chose Redlands for its expedited program, one that offered a flexible schedule with a curriculum component on social justice. She finished the program finding she had gained much more.

“I realized my education was different from others during my student teaching position at a well known middle school,” she said. “The other student teachers from other programs did not have the intimate and personal instruction that I had been receiving at Redlands.”

Redlands provided her with a solid network of professors, staff, students and cohorts who helped her to build a foundation for success. “They are all very supportive and dedicated to Redlands’ commitment to teach social justice to future teachers.”

The University of Redlands is one of the only colleges in the country to dedicate a program to educational justice, the idea that all children deserve an equal education.

Ellis looks forward to applying this principle to all aspects of her career. She recommends Redlands for those interested in becoming teachers and encourages them to come to class with an open mind.

“Know that you’re working with quality people, so take advantage of those resources and seize every opportunity to get to know them,” she said. “Their experience is helpful and invaluable.”

University of Redlands students contribute more than 100,000 hours of community service annually.
